THE MINISTRY OF MUSIC IN THE PARISH OF

ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST AND ST. JOSEPH

“Whoever sings, prays twice.” St. Augustine of Hippo

Choral, cantorial and instrumental music serve vital roles in our liturgies to one end: to inspire, support and lead the singing of the gathered assembly.

The Parish of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph's organ

Our church boasts one of the finest pipe organs in the Capital District. Erected in 1890, refurbished and expanded in 1975, and provided with a state of the art digital console in 2007, it takes maximum advantage of the marvelous acoustics of our basilican space, with magnificent musical results.

Cantors help lead singing at both masses. Parish and guest instrumentalists have played, including flautists, guitarists, and trumpeters. An adult choir sings at the Sunday morning mass; children’s choirs have sung seasonally on major solemnities, feasts and memorials.

New participants are always welcome. For more information, please contact Edee Silva, Liturgical Musician at 465-0482 ext. 218.
